Product range overview -oil temperature control units

Oil temperature control unit from Tool-Temp -designed for performance

The advantage of using oil temperature control units lies in their ability to achieve extremely high inlet temperatures. Oil temperature control units from Tool-Temp have maximum operating temperatures up to 360 °C. We have developed these units ourselves to ensure that no oxidation occurs and only minimal thermal decomposition of the oil. This considerably lengthens the service life of the heat transfer medium and prevents odours from developing and flammable oil vapours from escaping. Oil temperature control units from Tool-Temp are designed for the best possible safety. This type of unit is available in single and dual circuit versions.

Tool-Temp oil heating and cooling units are almost identical in their design. An inline pump transports the medium to the consumer. A bypass ensures constant lubrication and cooling for the pump, even in the event of a blockage. The heating elements are integrated into a pipe. The heat transfer medium flows around these in a defined flow ratio. To protect against overheating and premature aging of the heat transfer medium, the heating elements used in Tool-Temp oil temperature control units are placed under a low load and are of large size. All oil units further feature a cold oil container in the form of an expansion tank. This compensates for expansion of the oil due to the temperature. This expansion can be significant at around 10% at 100 °C. So that, in comparison to the circulation medium, temperate or cold oil is collected in the expansion tank, the tank is thermally decoupled via a thermosiphon. Oil that has expanded remains in the tank and is guided into the expansion tank using forced flow. Tool-Temp works with especially large expansion tanks, enabling the units to handle the return flows from large consumers, particularly double-walled containers, reactors and rollers. A particular quality feature of Tool-Temp oil temperature control units is the design of the pipe bundle cooler. The oil flows through this while the cooling water flows through the surrounding register pipe, washing around the pipes containing the heat transfer medium. This type of construction places significant demands on the design, but offers the advantage that the heat exchanger avoids limescale. Any deposits that build up are easily removed. This cooling system stands out for being easy to service and extremely robust.

Tool-Temp places great value on a range of different safety aspects for its high-temperature heating units.

  • Process monitoring: using flow measurement.
  • Level control: The level of the heat transfer medium in the unit is monitored to prevent overfilling.
  • Monitoring of the film temperature in the heater: A bypass ensures there is always a minimal circulation.
  • Triple redundant temperature safety shut off switches.

All elements required for control and automatic monitoring such as push buttons, contactors, thermal relays for the pump motor, circuit breakers as well as the temperature controller are housed in the unit’s switch box.

Temperature control uses a PID controller with heat-neutral-cool settings. The electronics are so designed that heating and cooling signals cannot be activated at the same time. This makes the controller extremely energy efficient.

When using semi-conductor contactors, the automatic safety devices and/or fuses cut the power supply in the event of an overload or short circuit within the protected component (e.g. heater).

Oil oxidation is the process whereby radicals appear that can then cause polymers and acids to form through several chemical processes when exposed to oxygen and heat. These polymers in the oil can result in increased viscosity and the oil taking on a brown colour. Gray-black changes in colour can occur when temperatures are even higher and without influence from oxygen. The molecular structure of the oil is broken up by this process. These reactions happen very quickly in components that are subject to high thermal loads (e.g. heaters, and sometimes in the die or the process). Products that result from the thermal breakdown of the oil are often insoluble and can lead to deposits forming that are very difficult to remove. Thermal breakdown also sees the long molecular structures of the oil broken up into shorter molecules. These shorter molecules evaporate much more quickly, thus lowering the flash point and causing a strong odour to appear. Tool-Temp deals with this problem by placing low loads on the heating elements and ensuring a high rate of flow.

Tool-Temp places great value on ensuring robust construction. High-temperature oil units especially make use of permanent pipe joints. These are made using highly automated bending machines at the plant in Sulgen. The housing is designed to be very robust and can withstand the rough conditions within the casting industry for many years. Heaters are placed under minimal load and the ratio of load on the heating surface to flow rate is optimised. Critical components such as coolers and flow rate sensors are produced in our own facilities. Tool-Temp uses two different types of pump in its oil units. Both magnetically coupled pumps as well as pumps with sliding ring seals are produced and tested at the factory in Sulgen. Both models are extremely robust and can easily withstand temperatures up to 360 °C.

Starting with the design phase, special attention is given to the materials used. Without exception, stainless steel is used at every single point that will come into contact with water.

Oil temperature control units are primarily used for heating tool moulds in the casting industry. The high process temperatures used require a relatively high oil temperature for cooling the mould. High temperatures are also needed in the chemical industry or when processing rubber. The primarily need is to cool and control the temperature of rollers, plates, double-walled containers and reactors.
