Cooling water consumption represents a significant energy cost. Even more important is that the cooling system is optimally designed. The industrial water coolers from Tool-Temp guarantee an energy-saving supply of cooling water for production systems. The wide range of Tool-Temp water cooling units includes compact, mobile cooling units on wheels as well as large stationary systems. Tool-Temp differentiates between air-cooled and water-cooled units. Models are available that use a ventilation system to push air from the environment through a condenser in order to remove heat energy from the circulating gas. The range of water-cooled cooling units requires cooling water that circulates through the unit and heat exchanger. As well as differentiating between cooling systems, Tool-Temp provides units with or without water tanks.

Industrial refrigeration machines from Tool-Temp can be divided into four categories:

  • Air-cooled industrial cooling units with tank

  • Water-cooled industrial cooling units with tank
  • Water-cooled industrial cooling units without tank

All units that operate within a water circulation temperature range of 10 °C to 45 °C use CFC-free refrigerant R-134a. In the low temperature range down to -30 °C, gas refrigerant R-404a is used. Using these refrigerants keeps the pressure ratios in the cooling circuit significantly lower than with other comparable cooling mediums. Together with large condensers and compressors, stable operation can be achieved even in high ambient temperatures of 45 °C and higher.

All cooling units are based upon the thermodynamic cycle. Compressing the gas in the low pressure chamber of the compressor from a pressure of 3-4 bar to a pressure of 15-20 bar heats the refrigerant up to 80-90 °C. In this gaseous form, the refrigerant flows to the condenser. There it cools down, changing state from a gas back to a liquid. The heat energy that the refrigerant carried with it is given off to the medium being used, either air or water. Although it has condensed back into a liquid, the refrigerant is still under high pressure. The gas is stored in a collector. This can reduce having to frequently start the compressors. The collectors used in Tool-Temp units are also designed to be able to hold all gas in the system in the event that maintenance is required. The principle of fast and easy maintenance is a core concept used in the development of all Tool-Temp products. When the controller initiates cooling, the solenoid valve opens and the gas flows to the expansion valve. The refrigerant expands in the expansion valve. This means that the pressure is reduced and a change of state from liquid to gas occurs. This change of state quickly reduces the temperature of the refrigerant. In this cold state it is fed to a heat exchanger where heat is transferred from circulation water to the refrigerant. Under low pressure, the gaseous refrigerant reenters the compressor where it is compressed, thus completing the circuit.

The principle of operation corresponds to the thermodynamic cycle described. Units in this range feature an integrated water tank that acts as a cold storage tank. The exchange of heat in the condenser takes place using the surrounding air. Fans blow air from the surrounding environment through the condenser. Inside the condenser, the liquid refrigerant cools down and transforms into a gas.

All units in this range feature a circulation pump that takes water from the internal tank and delivers it to the system requiring cooling. Units with a rated cooling capacity above 100 kW feature a dedicated pump that circulates process water between the tank and the cooling plate heat exchanger. This allows the maximum cooling capacity to be achieved even with low rates of flow to the process system. A further advantage is that the tank can be cooled to the target temperature, even if there is no flow to the process system. It is therefore possible to achieve intermittent shock cooling, using the tank as a cold buffer reservoir.

Cooling units from Tool-Temp can operate in ambient temperatures of up to 45 °C. The CFC-free refrigerant R-134a guarantees smooth operations, even in high ambient temperatures.

Industrial cooling units without tanks also work using the thermodynamic cycle. Units without a water tank that serves as a cold storage tank need to be connected to an external water tank. Using an external tank means the operator is not limited to a particular size. The tank can be any size, provided the cooling unit has sufficient cooling capacity. All devices of this type feature a circulation pump that takes process water from this external tank, moves it through the internal plate heat exchanger (cooler) before finally moving it on to the system that requires cooling.

All elements required for control and automatic monitoring such as push buttons, contactors, thermal relays for the pump motor, circuit breakers as well as the temperature controller are housed in the unit’s switch box. Temperature control uses a PID controller with heat-neutral-cool settings. The electronics are so designed that heating and cooling signals cannot be activated at the same time. This makes the controller extremely energy efficient. When using semi-conductor contactors, the automatic safety devices and/or fuses cut the power supply in the event of an overload or short circuit within the protected component (e.g. heater).

Industrial cooling units from Tool-Temp stand out for their robust design that can withstand the most demanding conditions. Without exception, stainless steel is used at every single point that will come into contact with water. All units with cooling power of up to 54 kW feature integrated heating elements so that the required temperature can be achieved quickly when starting up the process. This helps minimise the initial losses associated with plastic injection moulding.

The applications of industrial cooling units are wide ranging. The compact and mobile design means that the units can be easily transported to where they are needed. The units are used for cooling tool machines, water baths and extrusion systems, as well as motors in large plants.
