Process thermostats in the pharmaceutical industry

In the pharmaceutical and chemical sectors you are confronted with the application-optimized temperature control of system components, reactors, double-walled containers, extruders and similarly complex systems. These tasks are often solved with expensive special designs such as steam systems. That doesn't have to be the case. Our solutions for the pharmaceutical and chemical industries can be adapted to your specific application area. Devices with explosion protection, maintaining exceptional control accuracy, rapid temperature jumps or ramp control are included in our standard range.

Process thermostats for -20°C to 350°C

The chemical industry produces chemical products for other sectors of the economy such as the plastics industry, food industry, automotive industry, building materials industry, etc. In the broadest sense, all industries that deal exclusively with the conversion of natural and the production of synthetic raw materials belong to the chemical industry. Inorganic and organic raw materials and chemicals as well as fertilizers, plastics, pharmaceutical products and also goods such as adhesives, gelatin, dyes and cleaning agents fall into this category.

As diverse as the raw materials produced are, the production processes in the chemical industry are just as varied.

In general, they can be divided into the following basic operations:

  • Separate
  • Unite
  • Cut up
  • Agglomerate and heat transfer

Substance transformations can occur through chemical reactions, physical transformation of substances or the conversion of one chemical element into another. We support highly complex operations with precise temperature control using a liquid heat transfer medium such as water or oil. In the reactor, reaction conditions that are favorable in terms of flow and thermodynamics must be created in order to generate optimal conversion of the materials. The reaction product mixture requires appropriate cooling and/or relaxation so that it can be used for further processing steps.

Temperature control tasks in the chemical industry are often solved with complex special designs. As an alternative to these very expensive special solutions, Tool-Temp offers established temperature control devices - i.e. process thermostats, which were developed for many applications in mechanical and plant engineering and can be cost-effectively adapted to these tasks.

The most commonly required temperature range is between -20°C and +350°C. For this entire performance range, Tool-Temp offers standard solutions that can be adapted to the specific area of application. Devices with explosion protection, maintaining exceptional control accuracies, rapid temperature jumps and the possibility of ramp control are included in the Tool-Temp standard program. Temperature control devices are an alternative to costly and complex steam systems. Our very wide product range of heating and cooling devices offers solutions in process development, mini-plant, scale-up, small-scale production up to large systems with several 100 kW of heating power requirements.

Process thermostats for -20°C to +240°C

The production processes for the production of pharmaceuticals include the extraction, manufacturing, preparation and filling, as well as the packaging and labeling of the products. All of these processes must adhere to strict guidelines and regulations. Whether it's the temperature control of double-walled containers, mixers and reactors, the packaging process or the subsequent cleaning, Tool-Temp supplies you with tailor-made control devices and process thermostats. We implement requirements such as splash water protection, designs made entirely of stainless steel, as well as interface connections to a central control center. We have created a line of equipment specifically for the temperature control of double-walled containers and reactors. This regulates temperature ranges from -25°C to +240°C directly from the manufactured product. The devices are designed for the greatest possible process reliability. They have pressure regulation so as not to damage the containers, as well as a digital flow display. Monitoring the flow and return temperatures is a matter of course for us in these demanding manufacturing processes.

Economical special solutions and customer-specific devices thanks to efficient series production
As a series producer for a wide variety of industries, we manufacture in stock. We therefore offer our customers the advantage of rapid delivery availability of the process thermostats. Customer-specific devices are integrated into ongoing production series and can thus be produced in a very cost-optimized manner and with a quick lead time.

We are happy to assist you with the technical design of the appropriate process thermostat.

Pharmaceutical industry - chemical industry - our knowledge of temperature control with process thermostats

Whether it's a headache tablet, a dragee for a sore throat or a cough syrup - precise temperature control is reflected in the quality parameters. This applies, for example, to the chemical and physical stability of the medication as well as the uniform distribution of the active ingredient and its controlled release in the patient over a certain period of time. Having the temperature control in production under control and being able to prove this to the authorities at any time creates an essential prerequisite for the release of each batch.

Whether it's a chemical reaction or a mixture of several components - you're almost always dealing with an exothermic or endothermic process. This makes heat supply or removal the most important control element for chemical production. Fine tuning in this area can represent a decisive competitive advantage.

The temperature control of reactions, mixtures, extractions or crystallizations is based on the well-known theoretical principles of thermodynamics and kinetics. However, no chemist is immune to surprises in practice - and that is why they are often happy to receive support from experienced temperature control experts.

Many components play a role in choosing the right temperature control system. We would be happy to advise you and discuss the ideal heating and cooling solution with you. Depending on the maximum working temperature, the required cooling capacity, the size of the consumer or the delivery rate, various temperature control solutions are available.

Our broad portfolio ranges from:

  • Water temperature control devices / 90°C max. temperature / 9 – 96 kW heating output
  • Pressurized water temperature control units / 160°C max. temperature / 9 – 48 kW heating output
  • Oil temperature control devices / 360°C max. temperature / 8 – 144 kW heating output

A model series was developed specifically for the temperature control of reactors and double-walled containers, the standard version of which largely covers all the requirements that these applications entail.

The model series includes three sizes:

  • TT-407 Z / 8 kW heating power / reactor capacity up to 50 liters
  • TT-409 Z / 24 kW heating power / reactor capacity 50 – 150 liters
  • TT-410 X / 48 kW heating power / reactor capacity 50 – 400 liters

With these heating and cooling devices, the temperature range from -20°C to +240°C can be covered using heat transfer fluid as a circulating medium. The devices have two independent heat exchangers in order to be able to regulate this wide temperature range. In order to achieve temperatures in the -20°C range, cooling 2 must be operated with brine.

Comprehensive safety features – pressure monitoring
The devices are equipped with three pressure gauges that monitor the pump pressure, the compressed air network and the compressed air in the device. The compressed air in the device can be adjusted via a pressure reducing valve. Energy consumption is reduced through regulation and controlled compressed air consumption. The display allows you to check the compressed air and makes adjustment easier.

Comprehensive safety features – temperature monitoring
The digital controller MP-988 works with three sensor inputs. A sensor is used to control the medium temperature. This takes the temperature of the product in the container or the oil temperature in the device tank as a reference point. Monitoring the temperature difference between this and a measuring point in the flow prevents the product surface from overheating.

Comprehensive safety features – adjustment of the supply pressure
In order not to damage the double jacket or the reactor, the feed pressure can be regulated. The speed of the pump can be easily adjusted on the frequency converter and the flow pressure can be read on the front pressure gauge.
